"Scientific Glass Boot Camp"
May 20 - 24 (5-day workshop)
This fast-paced course will cover a wide variety of techniques utilized by scientific glassblowers. Learn new techniques and improve your hand-skills at the bench and on the lathe. In this workshop we will cover bends, seals, how to make coils, and other processes. Whether you are interested in scientific glass or in leveraging these skills to add to your creative work, this class will benefit you! All skill levels and beginners welcome.
This class meets from 9am to 5pm each day, Monday through Friday, with additional studio time Monday through Thursday, from 5pm to 9pm. Materials for participating in the course are included. If you have specific colors you are interested in working with please bring them with you.
Instructors
Katie Severance earned an associate degree in Scientific Glass Technology from Salem Community College in 2011. While studying at Salem, Katie completed an internship with Mike Souza at Princeton University. There she fabricated target cells for high-powered lasers while working with specialty glasses such as aluminosilicate, GE180, and quartz. In 2010, Katie joined Chemglass Life Sciences, where she learned to fabricate various borosilicate apparatus while operating a glass lathe. During this time, Katie furthered her glass education at night by studying artistic flameworking with renowned artist Paul J. Stankard.
Katie has presented at the annual symposium of the American Scientific Glassblower Society, and at the International Flameworking Conference. Katie now teaches at Salem Community College and is an independent artist in Philadelphia, combining her skills as a scientific lathe worked with her passion for sculpting realistic floral designs.
Klaus Paris leads the Scientific Glass Technology instructional team at Salem Community College with 40 years' experience in scientific glassblowing. He is a Master Craftsman in Scientific Glassblowing and a State Certified Engineering Glass Technologist. Klaus was trained at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. He then worked with quartz glass for Heraeus in Germany.
After receiving his degrees at the Technical College in Hadamar, Germany, he furthered his career at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany. During this time, he was consulting on a project (production of glass syringes and precision capillary glass tubes) in the United States.
Klaus joined his father's scientific glassblowing business in 1995 where he was designing and producing scientific apparatus from varied technical glasses. He trained an apprentice and was the team leader for the workshop.
Klaus worked for 12 years as a Master Scientific Glassblower in the second largest research institution in Europe, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), in Karlsruhe, Germany. While working at KIT, Klaus taught apprentices and scientists the basics of scientific glassblowing. During this time, Klaus was also involved in projects at the JRC on Nuclear Safety and Security, laser sealing of radioactive samples in glass containers, and with GLASSOMER in developing three-dimensional printing of transparent fused silica glass.
Klaus has been engaged in his volunteer positions at the American Scientific Glassblowers Society (ASGS) and the German Glassblower Society, Verband Deutscher Glasbläser e.V. (VDG), for over twenty years.
Additional Information
- Participation limited to students 18 years of age and up.
- Lunch is available for an additional fee; $100 for 5-day workshops.
- Classes meet 9 am to 5 pm each day. Students will have additional practice time the first four evenings of the course, Monday through Thursday, from 5 pm to 9 pm.
- Materials for participating in the course are included. If you have specific colors you are interested in working with please bring them with you.
- Any work from the final day of the course remaining in a kiln will be available for pick up beginning the following Monday. Students may have finished worked shipped for an additional fee.
